What can I get tested for at the Sexual Health Center?

STIs

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), also known as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), pass from person-to-person through any sexual contact, including anal, oral or vaginal sex. The only way to know if you have an STI is through testing. The Sexual Health Center offers testing for gonorrhea, syphilis and chlamydia. If you have a positive or abnormal STI test result, low or no cost treatment options are available. 

HIV

HIV is a virus that passes from person-to-person through unprotected sexual contact or contact with HIV-positive blood or bodily fluids. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. The only way to know if you have HIV is to get tested. Once you get tested you’ll know your preliminary results within 20 minutes. If you test positive for HIV, you will need ongoing medical care. Sexual Health Center personnel will assist in connecting you to care.

Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is an infection that passes from person to person through contact with hepatitis C – positive blood. The only way to know if you have hepatitis C is to get tested. If you test positive for hepatitis C, you’ll need ongoing medical care. Sexual Health Center personnel will assist in connecting you to care. 

What are the symptoms of STIs?

Often, STIs show no symptoms at all. If you think you may have come into contact with an STI, you should get tested.

Symptoms of gonorrhea might include:

  • pain when you go to the bathroom (urinate)
  • unusual discharge from your penis or vagina
  • vaginal bleeding between your periods

Symptoms of chlamydia might include:

  • pain during sex
  • abdominal or lower back pain
  • burning when you pee (urinate)
  • discharge from your penis or vagina

Symptoms of syphilis might include:

  • one or many sores, usually on the genitals, mouth or anus
  • a skin rash on your hands, feet, abdomen, chest or back

Syphilis has four stages. It’s important to treat syphilis as early as possible. When syphilis is left untreated, it can have long term effects.

What are the symptoms of HIV?

HIV often doesn’t have any symptoms, but some people initially experience symptoms that feel like a cold, the flu, or even mono (mononucleosis). These symptoms can include a fever, aches and a sore throat.

What are the symptoms of hepatitis C?

Hepatitis C often doesn’t have any symptoms. You should be tested for hepatitis C if you think that you have come in contact with     hepatitis C.

How much does testing and/or treatment cost?

No one is ever denied services based on their ability to pay. Condoms are available at no cost.
