Communicable Disease

Communicable diseases are diseases that are spread from one person to another. Visit the New York Department of Health website for more information, as well as a complete list of communicable diseases.

Prevention Is Key:

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth because this is how germs spread.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough and sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash, then wash your hands or use alcohol-based hand cleanser.
  • Get your flu shot, as well as any other vaccines that are available to prevent certain illnesses.
  • If you are sick with the flu, avoid contact with people until at least 24 hours after your fever is gone (without use of any fever-reducing medicine).
  • Stay home from work or school if you are ill.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, or alcohol-based hand cleanser.
