The Explorer Post was formed in 1996 and runs under the auspice of the Boy Scouts of America. Exploring has long been a method by which young people can learn about careers in which they have an expressed interest.

The Wyoming County Sheriff's Office Explorer Post is under the direction of Deputies John Button, Colin Reagan and Kevin Klump. There are currently eight Explorers ranging from age 14 to 21.

The Explorers pay dues to the Boy Scouts of America which also covers their insurance. They also purchase their own uniforms through private money as well as fund raising events. They meet monthly at the Sheriff's Office and have established bylaws and officers. The current Officers of the Explorer Post are Captain Nicholas Wright, Sergeant Cody Amrhein and Secretary Charlie Copeland.

Explorers not only learn about various aspects of law enforcement, but are extremely helpful with Sheriff's events. During the week of the county fair, they provide coverage for the Sheriff's booth and also provide all fingerprinting done of children throughout the week. Explorers also assist at the annual Exposition and other events as needed.

It has been rewarding to see Explorers from this agency enter into careers in law enforcement. A current part-time Wyoming County Sheriff dispatcher had his beginnings in the explorer post and is anxiously awaiting full-time employment in the law enforcement field. Additionally, we have applications from young people desiring positions as deputy sheriffs who have previously been explorers.
